Window Wisdom

Making the investment in new windows is a big decision for most people. In order to help you facilitate that decision, we’ve answered some of the most common and important questions in this section.

If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Q: How Do I Select The Best Window Frame For My Needs?

A: Today’s most popular option – by far – is PVC Vinyl because:

1. Well constructed and designed PVC windows can have positive E.R. numbers on both operating and picture windows. With air infiltration values 10 or more times better than the highest CSA standard our PVC windows are sure to blow every standard out of the water. Because PVC uses dead air space (insulation chambers), well designed PVC window frames will be warm to the touch even in the extreme weather conditions we’re accustomed to in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
2. If built properly, PVC windows are long lasting and low maintenance. Windows that Duraco installed over 30 years ago look almost new and have required absolutely no maintenance.
3. PVC windows are designed to be custom sized to your needs and specifications at no extra cost to you and no extra time to build.
4. Duraco frames & sashes are heat fused, eliminating cracks in the corners. This type of construction greatly improves the insulation value and looks of your windows.
5. Duraco operating PVC windows have been tested at wind speed equivalents of over 328 km/h with no effect on their operation. Our windows provide all the structural strength you’ll ever need.
6. Duraco PVC windows can be built in almost any shape or style imaginable and will accept virtually all glazing options you might like.

Q: How Do I Check Window Quality?

A: Assuming you are satisfied with appropriate test results & have had these explained to you in terms you can understand, it is wise to check the following:

1. Check the finishing work on the windows – frame sash, weather strip, etc. Especially check the corners for adequate seal. Be sure to check the window inside and out.
2. Operate each window several times. Operation should be smooth and effortless – windows should not stick, bind or sag.
3. The finish on the frames of the windows should be consistent, pleasing to the eye and clean.
4. Ask to see actual production windows or orders about to be shipped to other customers. Make sure the production windows (which are what you’ll be buying) are the same finish & quality as the display windows you have been shown. Many window companies show you a nicer window when selling and ship you a lower quality window.
5. Bear in mind the company you choose to deal with will be as important as the product you select. If service is lacking in the beginning, it will only get worse after you give them your money.

Q: How Do I Choose A Reputable Window Company?

A: Your best bet is to get customer references either from the Company itself or from friends that have dealt with the company you’re considering. In addition ask:

1. How long have they been in business?
2. Is there are written guarantee and service policy?
3. Do they supply and install so that any and all potential problems can be looked at by one source?
4. Can they support their claims properly?
5. Do they speak in plain language or confuse you with jargon?
6. Above all, do not succumb to high pressure sales tactics and check things out before you commit to ANY window company…even Duraco!
7. If you are able, visit their plant and showroom. You will get a better feel for the company on their premises.
8. As mentioned before, the company you choose to deal with will be as important as the product you select. If service is lacking in the beginning, it will only get worse after you give them your money.

Q: How Do I Determine If I Need New Windows?

A: The most common indications are if your existing windows are/have:

1. Hard to open sashes
2. Air or water leaks.
3. Rotten frames, peeling paint or separating corners
4. Cracked glass or condensation between glass panels
5. Excessive street or traffic noise with the window closed
6. Annoying condensation or ice build up in cold weather. Also, there is a definite comfort zone surrounding your windows. If you feel uncomfortable or drafts when you are close to your windows you should look into replacing them.
7. If you feel or see any of these signs, call a reputable window company to come to your home for an assessment and estimate. Both should be FREE of charge and at your convenience.

Q: Why Should I Invest In New Windows?

A: New, quality windows that are properly installed will enhance the value, comfort level and appearance of your home. In addition:

1. You will save on your energy bills, noise levels from outside will be reduced and there should be less condensation on your glass making your home more comfortable.
2. Your new windows will operate easier and you can custom design your windows with the many style and energy options available today. As a bonus, if you choose Duraco PVC windows, they will be virtually maintenance free.
3. The value of your home will increase and make it easier to sell should you ever decide to move.

Q: What About All The Glass Claims Being Made?

A: First, no one has any exclusivity on any glass, no matter what you’re told. If anybody tells you they use an excusive glass, they are likely lying and you should look elsewhere. Any window maker can get any type of configuration of glazing available.

In Manitoba and Saskatchewan, glass should be triple glazed with ½" air spaces or at least dual glazed with Low E plus Argon fill. Dual glazing of any kind will not insulate and reduce condensation as well as Triple glazing.

The main glass offerings are:

1. Warm Edge Spacers: This means that the bar that separates the glass is not metal and will not conduct heat or cold. This is a must in Manitoba.
2. Low E Glass: Not all Low E is the same. Simply put, Low E glass basically does not insulate but has the same effect by blocking reflected heat from leaving or entering the home. In the winter, heat from the sun will stay trapped in your home once it enters. In the summer, heat reflected from the ground will not enter your home.
3. Argon Gas: Argon is an inert gas that will resist forming air currents between the glass and slows heat from escaping. Argon has little effect unless paired with Low E glass.
4. Other Options: You may also get glass that is tinted, obscured or tempered for safety. Call and ask what other options might be available since glass options are constantly changing.

Q: How Do I Select The Right Windows For My Home?

A: First, what do you need/want from new windows? What result are you looking for? Be careful not to buy what is being promoted or pushed without making sure the product meets your objectives. Consider the following, in order of importance to you:

1. Quality
2. What Frame Material You Want
3. Energy Efficiency
4. Ease Of Operation
5. Appearance
6. Window Styles Available
7. Maintenance Schedule
8. After The Sale Service
9. Installation Quality and Timeframe
10. Warranty
Do not select windows based on one feature or benefit to the exclusion of others.
